He was astounded upon seeing a photo of the tribe of Machiguenga being accompanied by a particular person whose identity was familiar to Vargas Llosa. The story developed from Mario's time in Florence, Italy, where he visited a small gallery that exhibited tribal artifacts and a couple of photographs. Mario also mentioned initially noticing Saul’s scar. He told about how Saul was an intelligent and cheerful person. Mario described their friendship as an awakening and raised questions about how Saul had a different mindset than his. He is the story’s first narrator he tells about the life of Saul as a kindhearted man who he became friends with during their university life. Mario Vargas Llosa is a Peruvian writer who studied at the University of San Carlos in Peru along with Saul Zuratas as they both studied hard to earn a degree.
